Why location changes the work
From the coast to the high desert, Southern California packs remarkable variety into a short drive. A garden in Hermosa Beach sits in sandy soil under coastal fog. A backyard in Pasadena bakes through August on rocky foothill ground. A lot in Lancaster faces hard winter freezes and relentless wind, and a yard in Bakersfield deals with valley heat, winter fog and heavy soil. Plant choices, timing and handling all shift with those conditions.
Access changes too. Dense neighborhoods with narrow side yards call for sectional work and careful debris handling. Hillside properties bring stairs, retaining walls and slopes that should not be left with a soft, open hole. Gated estates and associations have their own rules. Avalon, on Santa Catalina Island, depends on transport by sea, so any project there starts with an honest logistics discussion.
The city pages are written to reflect those differences. They describe the regional climate, the typical setting and the practical questions people in that city tend to ask. They do not list invented local projects; they explain what to think about before you write.

Kern County gardens face longer, hotter summers than most of Los Angeles County, plus tule fog and frost on the valley floor and true desert conditions around Ridgecrest. Heavy, alkaline clay in parts of the valley makes raised, fast-draining beds especially important, and overspray from lawns or nearby fields is a common cause of rot.
